Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone delivered an emotional message to Aston Villa fans after his loan spell ended following Saturday's play-off final defeat to Fulham.

With the West Midlands side forced to make several financial cuts ahead of a third season in the Championship, they will have little chance of signing the keeper on a permanent basis.

Instead, the Manchester United stoppers future will lie in the Premier League, with several clubs already credited with an interest in him.

His Instagram post following the final, as detailed by Birmingham Live, suggests Johnstone is also aware he played his last game for Villa.

"I am proud to say I have played for Aston Villa. To be able to perform in front of a full Villa Park for the past 18 months has been so special to me, with ups and downs along the way, learning so much in each game and in every day."

"What a great group of lads, staff and fans Aston Villa has. Be proud. Once again, devastated we couldn’t finish the job we set out to complete. UTV."

The Verdict

The harsh reality of Saturday was that whoever lost would be losing a lot of players in the summer and Villa now have to plan accordingly.

Johnstone will be out of their reach financially and he is sure to get a Premier League move as he was outstanding this season for Steve Bruce's side.

Villa fans will appreciate all he did for the club and it will be tough to find a keeper as good as him to come in next season.
