Carlisle United have recently parted company with manager Steven Pressley after a poor start to this year's league campaign.

The Blues are currently sat 20th in the League Two table, and are just five points clear of the foot of the fourth tier, which will make for concerning reading for the club's supporters.

They finished 11th in League Two last season, so there would have been high-hopes that they could fire themselves into promotion contention from the first game of the season.

But they've struggled for much of this season, which resulted in the club relieving Pressley of his duties in charge earlier this month.

Carlisle have since released a statement with an update on their search to find Pressley's successor, with Director of Football David Holdsworth claiming that the club have received over 100 applicants for the vacancy.

"Discussions will begin today and will continue over the course of the coming week. We know how important this appointment is to the fans and to the club, and we will take our time to ensure that we get the right person to push this club forward."

Carlisle are next in action on Saturday when they take on Cambridge United in League Two as they look to get back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats recently.

The Verdict:

The sooner they have someone appointed, the better.

I think they made the right call in parting company with Pressley, but they need to act swiftly in appointing his successor now, otherwise their results will only get worse.

I would have thought that Carlisle would have been challenging for a spot in the play-offs this season, so it's clear to see that they needed a change, and it's important that they get this next appointment right.
