Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has suggested that the Whites could lose some of their key players if they’re not rewarded with new contracts.

Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas, and Liam Cooper have all signed new deals with the club since the start of the season.

Mateusz Klich appears to be the next in line and is reportedly close to extending his stay at Elland Road.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills provided his view on the Poland international’s potential new contract and suggested that it was a necessary move.

He said: “I think he’s been very good, the past couple of seasons he’s been at Leeds United he’s been one of their most consistent players.

“He’s working hard, he’s fit, he’s consistent. Yeah, thoroughly deserved, a new deal.

“That’s what’s important. You’re building a squad, you want to add to that. You keep everybody around you and every now and then you add to it. They’ve got the basis of a good squad.

“They’ve got some experienced players, they don’t want to get rid of these players. You want to build on what you’ve got.

"If you don’t make players feel wanted and give them new contracts when they’ve done well, then they’re going to leave.”

Leeds have made a strong start to the season and are currently top of the Championship.

The Verdict

It is hard to disagree with Mills, Leeds need to make sure they reward their key players with new deals to keep them at the club.

The Whites saw Kemar Roofe, who had been their top scorer over the past two seasons, leave the club in the summer after entering the final year of his contract.

They have acted quickly to secure the futures of a number of key player’s futures and ensure they don’t have a repeat of the Roofe situation, where they had little power to stop him moving to Anderlecht and didn’t receive as high a fee as they would likely have wanted–reportedly between £6.5 and £7 million.

Klich is understood to have caught the eye of Burnley so tying him down looks smart.
