Aston Villa came crashing back down to earth on Saturday evening, with Wolverhampton Wanderers handing Steve Bruce’s side a 2-0 defeat at Molineux.

Second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini secured all three points for Wolves, with Bruce’s side unable to live with their attacking threat.

Villa entered Saturday’s fixture on the back of four consecutive victories and an unbeaten September, which had helped the club rise to seventh in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Glenn Whelan had been ever-present during Villa’s run of four consecutive victories, and it was no surprise to see him named alongside Conor Hourihane in central midfield at Molineux.

Whelan, like the majority of his Villa teammates, struggled to make an impact on the game, with the Irishman’s performance largely criticised by Villa’s supporters on social media.

Many of Villa’s supporters are calling for the 33-year-old to be axed by Bruce.
