Leeds United are near to completing the signing of 18-year-old Wigan Athletic midfielder Sean McGurk, according to Paul Joyce of the Times.
Joyce’s tweet stated that the figure is likely to be around the £175,000 mark but could still be decided by a tribunal.
Former Leeds striker, Noel Whelan, spoke to Football Insider about the potential of bringing McGurk to Elland Road, and said: “It sounds like a bargain for a very highly rated young player.
“He is a player who will not be stepping straight into a first-team role. I expect him to take a similar path to (Joe) Gelhardt and start in the Under-23s.
“We are looking to the future and looking to add competition for places.”

The potential and subsequent interest that McGurk has drawn makes £175,000 seem like an absolute steal. The fact that Joe Gelhardt departed, when in a very similar stage of his development, for a fee just shy of £1million is another indicator that this seems like a real bargain.
However, he is still only 18 and is yet to delve into the rigours of professional football. He has thrived at youth level but there are still a lot of hurdles to overcome before assessing the price tag fully.
Should McGurk make his move to Leeds, he will expect to go straight into the u23’s. However, Leeds value their youth team very highly and the emergence of Jamie Shackleton and Leif Davis would provide hope for McGurk.
It will also be important for McGurk to gain regular first-team minutes, but, there would be no rush considering his age and a return to the EFL on a loan may be prioritised at a later step in his progression.
