Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash has claimed that he would pick Lionel Messi if he could sign any player for the Reds.
The 22-year-old has been hugely impressive for Sabri Lamouchi’s side this term and has adapted excellently to his move to right-back.
Cash has spent the majority of his career in midfield but has emerged as Forest’s first-choice right-back this term.
The Englishman’s tenacity and energy make him a nuisance for opposition attackers, while he is a near-constant threat on the right flank – adding three goals and four assists so far this season.
With the EFL season delayed for nearly two months, The Athletic has conducted a unique Q&A with Cash – asking him questions submitted by local school children.
The defender was asked which player he would sign for Forest if he could choose any, and replied: “Lionel Messi. It would have to be him or Ronaldo, wouldn’t it?
“But can you imagine seeing Messi in a Forest shirt, it would be incredible. Being able to play with him? Wow.
“The stadium would be full. The press box would be full… there wouldn’t be a spare seat anywhere. We would all want to be playing in that game. Watch out everyone, with him in the side…”
It looks as though it could be a pivotal summer for Cash.
His Forest side sit fifth as things stand but it remains unclear whether they will get a chance to continue their promotion push and it will be interesting to see whether Cash will be willing to play another season in the Championship if offers are there.
Can you remember which Nottingham Forest manager signed each of these 15 players? Have a go now!
It’s hard to disagree with Cash on this one.
Messi is one of the best players in the world, if not the best, and is arguably in the conversation for the best player of all time.
It’s obviously unrealistic but just the thought of Messi playing for the City Ground outfit is surely an exciting one fo Forest fans.
