Birmingham City's pursuit of Marcus Maddison is now over after Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed that the Championship side had failed to reach an agreement over the midfielder.

Having entered the final six months of his contract at the Weston Homes Stadium, the 26-year-old became the subject of considerable interest from the Blues earlier this month.

According to Football Insider, Birmingham had reportedly had a bid accepted by Peterborough for Maddison.

However, although MacAnthony revealed that talks between Posh director of football Barry Fry and Blues chief executive Xuandong Ren did take place regarding the midfielder, the move is now off.

One of the stand-out performers in League One over the past few seasons, Maddison has provided 128 direct goal contributions at this level for Peterborough.

Whilst he has yet to play in the second-tier during his career, it would not be at all surprising if he ends up thriving in this division in the not too distant future given his wide array of skills.

After a Blues supporter asked MacAnthony on Twitter whether the club were still pursuing a deal for Maddison, he replied: "Bazza [Barry Fry] tried with Dong [Xuandong Ren] but alas couldn't get an agreement.

"Down to two clubs now for him.

"Not Birmingham I'm afraid."

Upon learning of the update regarding Maddison, these Birmingham City fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions.
