Michael O'Neill made a magnificent start to life as Stoke City manager at the weekend, with his new set of players winning 4-2 against Barnsley at Oakwell.

The Potters appointed the Northern Ireland boss on Friday afternoon, just 24 hours before they prepared to take on relegation-threatened rivals Barnsley in a massive game.

Before the weekend, Barnsley sat one point and one place above Stoke, with the Potters sitting six points adrift of safety at the foot of the Sky Bet Championship table.

But O'Neill's side showed fight and quality to pick up a majestic 4-2 win at Oakwell, thanks to goals from Sam Clucas, Joe Allen and Lee Gregory.

A terrific start to O'Neill's tenure of the Staffordshire club, then, but a start is all it is. They will now be hoping to kick on and pick up back-to-back wins against as they look to take on Wigan Athletic next weekend.

It would have been a massive relief for the players to claim only their third win of the season, though, and Jack Butland clearly enjoyed his weekend.

After an impressive performance at the weekend, the experienced shot-stopped enjoyed a round of golf on a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

The Verdict

That's the Stoke City that everybody expected them to be this season - what a performance they put in against Barnsley, in what was a massive game.

Fair play to O'Neill - he made several changes at the weekend and changed the formation, and made things simple.

He will be looking for the players to replicate the same level of performance next week, and it's a big opportunity for Stoke to pick up another three points against another struggling side in Wigan.
