John Terry is back in training with Aston Villa’s first-team after a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Villa’s club captain has missed the last two Sky Bet Championship fixtures with a troublesome ankle, but looks set to return to action this weekend when Villa face Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

@AVFCOfficial have shared images of the 37-year-old back in training ahead of the weekend.

Terry returns to a side in a fantastic position in the Championship table, with play-off football now guaranteed at Villa Park.

In Terry’s absence, Steve Bruce’s side picked up back-to-back 1-0 victories over Cardiff City and Leeds United, which means they will at the very least, be competing in the play-offs when May comes around.

Last Friday night’s victory over Leeds kept alive a slim hope of automatic promotion, but with just three fixtures of the season remaining, finishing in the top-two is out of Villa’s hands, with Cardiff City and Fulham in a strong position.

Following this weekend’s clash with Ipswich, Villa return to Villa Park to take on Derby County in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Bruce’s side are then on the road again the following week, travelling to London to face Millwall, who they could well meet again in the play-offs.

The Verdict

Seeing Terry back in training will delight Villa’s supporters.

Although the defender hasn’t been missed in recent weeks, he is a huge presence at the back for Bruce’s side and is going to be key as Villa try to clinch promotion.

Bruce will not risk the defender if he isn’t full right, as Terry will be so important when the play-offs come around.
