Bristol City manager Lee Johnson in looking to add to his squad, with the start of the Championship season just a matter of days away, with Portsmouth defender Nathan Thompson a target, according to Bristol Live reporter Gregor McGregor on Twitter.

Thompson, 28, has been at Fratton Park since June 2017 , where he has made 67 appearances, having previously made 167 appearances for Swindon Town.

The defender now finds himself out of contract at Fratton Park, with Bristol City keen on a potential deal.

So would free-agent Thompson be a good addition at Ashton Gate?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

"Thompson has been a solid performer in League One for several years now and he is deserving of a move to the second-tier.

"However, with The Robins targeting the play-offs it seems like quite a big jump for Thompson to make, as he is probably best suited playing for a lower-mid table Championship side.

"In a defence consisting of Webster, Kalas and Da Silva he would no doubt be the weak link and could be targeted by the opposition as an area which could be exploited, which would make the step up even more difficult for him.

"However, with Jack Hunt at the club he is more likely to be a back-up player, and considering that he would be a good option to add the squad."

Ned Holmes

“I’m torn over this one. He could fill a need for the Robins but it seems like a bit of an uninspiring signing.

“City are a bit light at right-back, with Jack Hunt and Zak Vyner their only current options, and Thompson could provide a bit of cover in the position.

“The 28-year-old has been a solid performer in League One for Portsmouth and Swindon Town, and he is an experienced player at this level but it seems slightly like he is being brought in to fill up the numbers.

“I can’t see him playing ahead of Hunt or Vyner so he will likely be joining as third-choice.

“Bailey Wright made five appearances at right-back last season and using him seemed to often throw off the balance of the side, so if this addition reduces the need to do that it is worth it.

“He also seems like a reliable addition to squad who can do a job. Plus, he is a free agent, which will leave more money available to add a new striker.”

Toby Wilding

"This could be a good signing for Bristol City.

"Thompson has been a solid defender at League One level for some time now, having spent the vast majority of his career playing at that level, and he may feel that the time has come to make the step up to the Championship.

"With Thompson capable of playing in a variety of positions, his versatility could make him a valuable asset to the Robins should injuries and suspensions start to take a toll on their squad, and his availability on a free transfer suggests this could be a smart move for Lee Johnson's side.

"The previous between Thompson and Bristol City's fanbase could add an extra bit of spice to this move, but if the defender is able to help the club finally make the step up into the Premier League, then you imagine all will be quickly forgiven."
