Nottingham Forest winger Gboly Ariyibi looked all set for a switch to the National league yesterday, with former club Chesterfield the potential suitor.

However, news has broken today that the 23-year old has rejected a switch in favour of remaining at his parent club and fighting for a place.

Ariyibi hasn't appeared at all for Forest since leaving Chesterfield in March 2017, but he enjoyed two loan spells last season. His MK Dons spell was cut short in January, but he quickly found another club in Northampton Town.

In total he played 40 matches last season, but he's no closer to first team action at the City Ground.

Should he have made the move to Martin Allen's side for regular football? Or is he right to remain at the City Ground, for whatever reasons he has? Our panel of Football League experts discuss whether him snubbing a Chesterfield switch is a good idea.

It's a surprise.

I can only think that he's got another move in mind because he's not going to play for Forest any time soon.

He's about 53rd in the pecking order at the club for a midfield spot given their recent signings and so I can't quite work it out.

I'm torn on this.

On one hand, Ariyibi needs first-team action week in, week out - and at his age, he shouldn't be languishing in the under-23's at Nottingham Forest.

He needs to develop and mature as a player and the only way he can do that is to leave the City Ground.

However, I believe the midfielder could do a job in the EFL, and moving down to the National League is a real step down for him.

I imagine he'll wait until January to secure a move away from the club.

It was never going to happen, surely?

Ariyibi is far too good for the National League and has League One experience to prove it.

There's a huge risk associated with the step down. If he struggles, his reputation nosedives.

Pitches aren't the best down there, crowds are hostile. It would have been too risky at this stage of his career.
