Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo is a shock target for West Ham United.

The Daily Express is reporting that the Lions’ arch rivals have been scouting the 23-year-old with a view to making a move in the summer.

Romeo has been one of the Championship club’s most consistent performers this season in an under-performing team.

West Ham have Ryan Fredericks as their first-choice right-back, but Romeo would be an addition for the future and one to rival the one-time Millwall loanee next season.

The Lions’ full-back is out of contract in the summer and could leave on a free if he does not sign a new deal between now and July 1.

The Hammers could face competition for the payer with a host of Championship clubs all keeping tabs on the impressive youngster, as well as Scottish giants Rangers tracking the right-back, too.

Millwall would not welcome a move for Romeo and will be hoping his signs a new deal with the club to ward off any unwanted interest in the summer.

But should he fail to agree on terms for an extended stay with the Lions, would it be a good signing for West Ham?

Here’s what our team of FLW writers had to say on the matter when posed that very question.

Jay Taylor

“Millwall fans will be hoping that if Romeo goes, it is to any club but West Ham.

“The defender has been mightily impressive this season and to lose him would be a huge blow.

“It would typify their season if they were to go down and lose a promising young full-back, especially to their bitter foes from east London.

“I think he would be back-up fodder to Ryan Fredericks – he’s not quite ready for a move the Premier League just yet.”

Jacob Potter

"A smart bit of business.

"Romeo is out of contract in the summer, and he could be a useful back-up option to have in the West Ham squad.

"He's got age on his side, and if you're getting an exciting young talent for free, then it's a no brainer surely?"

Gary Hutchinson

“I’m surprised at this.

“He’s clearly impressed someone, and if I’m honest, I’ve not seen a lot of him in action.

“If they’re doing battle with Rangers, that’s two big clubs chasing him.

“It’s a nice position to be in; that’s for sure.”
