Phil Neville is being considered by Sheffield Wednesday as a replacement for Garry Monk, as per Sky Sports.

Neville, 43, is the current manager of the England women's team and is being earmarked by the Owls as a potential candidate for the manager's role at Hillsborough, with the likes of Sol Campbell, Tony Pulis and Paul Cook among those also being touted.

So, what do you make of the news of Wednesday's interest in Neville? Good potential appointment?

I’m quite surprised by this. I thought Wednesday might explore one of the more experienced options kicking around at the moment, but that’s not to say that Neville wouldn’t be a good appointment.

The 43-year-old was a top player, we can’t deny that and the experience of managing at international level in the women’s game will have given him interesting knowledge.

The Championship is a little bit tricky to get the hang of, but that’s not to say Neville will not be able to adapt to the second-tier and make a good fist of things with Wednesday.

My concern with the appointment is that Wednesday are in a relegation fight at the moment and I’d question whether Neville truly has the nous to keep the Owls clear of trouble.

I can’t help but think he’d be better taking over in a summer, but it is hard to predict how this would do.

It's probably not a name I expected to be linked with this role.

Having only ever managed at international level before, you do feel it would be something of a risk to bring Neville in at Hillsborough, given there is no certainty over how he would cope with the more day in day out unrelenting nature of club football.

That would of course be a risk for Wednesday to take given the precarious position they find themselves in, not least when you consider the fact that Neville's record with England's women did feel slightly unconvincing at times.

You also feel as though there are other options better suited to this role based on expeirience, who are available for the Owls to go out and get to fill this role now, so I wouldn't be putting Neville at the top of my list of possible targets if I was looking for Monk's replacement for Wednesday.

Phil Spencer

With so many names in the mix for the Sheffield Wednesday job it seems likely that a top manager will be heading to Hillsborough.

Unfortunately I can't see Phil Neville being that person.

While Neville has done a good job with England, he's unproven at club level meaning that this would be something of a gamble.

Given the slightly precarious situation that the Owls are in at present I feel that they need a safe pair of hands to take charge of the club and grind out some results to help them avoid the drop.

Neville will be a good manager in the EFL or Premier League one day but I think that this would be too big an ask.
