Wigan Athletic are closing in on the appointment of Kolo Toure, with the Leicester City coach expected to be named as their new boss by the weekend.

It was revealed last week that the former Arsenal player was the frontrunner to take over from Leam Richardson but it has still to be confirmed.

However, the Latics are making progress in their pursuit of Toure, as the BBC stated that the 41-year-old is in line to be appointed by the weekend by the Championship strugglers who are in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Whilst he has experience as a coach, this will be Toure's first role as a manager. But, is he ready for such a big job as Wigan battle to survive? Here our writers share their thoughts...

I'm not totally convinced about this one.

Toure has been learning and honing his craft for five years under Brendan Rodgers, and of course coaches have to make their start somewhere when it comes to being a number one.

But looking at Wigan's squad, it doesn't look to have lots of strength to it, and I'm not sure what improvement Toure could get out of the majority of them.

If Toure were to be backed in the January transfer window with some new players, then I could see this being a half-decent move for him to start his managerial career.

But as of right now, I think it could be an appointment that backfires on Wigan.

This certainly feels like a risk.

It should be said that Toure is certainly qualified for this position after the coaching experience he has built up with Celtic and Leicester, and working with someone like Brendan Rodgers will have helped him a lot.

However, Wigan are in a very difficult position and there is a feeling that they should have gone for a more experienced figure to get them out of this situation.

They don't have a big budget, the squad is limited in certain areas and they're in a relegation battle, so it's a massive risk for both Toure and Wigan.
