Reported Leeds United target Ibai Gomez is closing in on a move to his former club Athletic Bilboa, snubbing a possible move to Elland Road.

Reports have suggested the 29-year old, who worked with Marcelo Bielsa at Bilboa, has been targeted by his former boss as a replacement for Samuel Saiz. That now looks unlikely to happen as he closes in on a return to his hometown club.

He's out of contract at the end of the season, meaning a 10 million euro release clause is likely to be ignored, with a price of around 3 million being quoted as the current fee. At that price, given his Bielsa experience, it is surprising that Leeds have not made their move.

That is if they were interested at all. Some of our Football League experts are not so sure this is the blow that many believe it to be, with Gomez clearly not high on the list of priorities at Elland Road.

Even if that is the case, he would still have been a key signing for the Whites.

It's a big blow.

Firstly, Gomez is a player that Bielsa knows well and he clearly thought he could add something to the team.

Also, they need a new creative player in the final third and Gomez looked as though he could make a difference to this team.

It's a blow but I'm not too surprised.

Leeds were always going to be making a statement if they got him given his class and interested parties.

They won't get too disheartened by this one.

Was he a target to begin with?

If he was you'd think that they'd try a bit harder to get him.

He's not priced too badly and he's worked with Bielsa before.

I'm not convinced they were after him and therefore it's not a blow at all.
