Sunderland are reportedly tracking Leyton Orient's Josh Koroma, according to The Sun.

The Black Cats made an attempt to bring him to the north-east in January, but saw a £200,000 bid rejected by the O's.

Koroma was a key player for Orient in the National League last season, and a driving factor behind their success in winning the league. He scored eleven goals and made seven assists, but his dribbling and flair was a handful against most teams he played against.

Sunderland missed out on promotion last time out and have identified Koroma as the man to change their fortunes. Leyton Orient reportedly want £500,000 for the 20-year-old which means it is a deal Sunderland could push through, but they face a battle with Huddersfield and Middlesbrough.

However, Korma's only experience of the EFL came primarily in the 2016/17 season, where he featured in a struggling O's side which got relegated - so he is an unknown quantity at League One level.

So, is Koroma ready for the step-up, would he be a good addition to the Sunderland squad? Our writers have their say.

Toby Wilding

"I'm not too convinced by this one.

"Sunderland may well need an alternative to the likes of Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke if they fail to fire again next season, but I'm not sure that Koroma would be the best option.

"With the Black Cats expected to challenge for promotion again next season, that feels like a lot of pressure to put on the 20-year-old in his first season at that level, particularly when his own goal scoring record in the lower leagues isn't the most exemplary."

Jacob Potter

"He'd be a brilliant signing. Koroma is unproven in League One though, and would be a gamble, but sometimes you have to take that.

"He's a raw talent with an exciting future ahead of him, and if he can hit the ground running, then Sunderland will have some player on their hands.

"The perfect player to fill the void left by Maja."

Gary Hutchinson

“No, I don’t think so.

“He’d go into their under 23 set up and I can’t see why they would spend precious budget on that right now.

“Sure, get promoted and invest in youth, but right now they need a first team capable of getting promoted.

“I don’t see Koroma as part of that, not at 20.”
