Shrewsbury Town have announced the signing of defender Chey Dunkley on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old central defender has spent the last two seasons playing at Sheffield Wednesday and, after not landing a new deal, Shrewsbury did not waste any time to sign up Dunkley beating other clubs to land the defender’s signature.

He has signed a two-year deal with The Shrews with the option to extend his contract another year, showing us that they believe that he can make an instant impact at the club.

However, there is a section of Sheffield Wednesday fans that don’t believe his exit will impact the squad with the new season, as he can’t play the style of football that Darren Moore wants.

Despite that, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit James Mappin believes that this move to Shrewsbury will be good for Dunkley.

James believes this transfer will benefit his career as he isn’t good enough to be playing at Wednesday, but is still a League One quality defender.

James explained to FLW: “No, I’m not surprised that he has landed a move at Shrewsbury, he is a good League One footballer. It didn’t quite work out for him at Sheffield Wednesday, and I don’t think that it could of.

“He didn’t play the type of football that we wanted to play, like passing it out from the back. He is very much defend first and play the ball second kind of thing.

“So, I am glad that he has got a move elsewhere.

“I think with him staying in League One, that is his level and that is what will be best for him in the future.”
