The Middlesbrough board will need to get a permanent manager appointed sooner rather than later, with pre-season under a month away.

One name that has shot into the frame is Hull City manager Nigel Adkins, who has confirmed he is leaving the KCOM at the end of June in a statement on Twitter - and has now been installed as joint second favourite to take over the reigns at the Riverside.

So would Adkins be a good appointment at Boro?

We discuss........

Kealan Hughes

“This would be a very good appointment.

“Adkins has had ups and downs in his managerial career, but he’s a proven quality Championship manager.

“He builds strong team spirit and has got Southampton promoted from this division previously, and he’d certainly get ‘Boro challenging again.”

Gary Hutchinson

“It would be a risky appointment.

“He plays a decent brand of football and understands the Championship, so in that respect it’s a decent move.

“He’s not reinventing the wheel though, is he? It’s a tried and tested move for a manager who is solid if unspectacular.

“After Pulis though, anything is an upgrade.”

Toby Wilding

"I'm not sure about this.

"Since leaving Southampton, Adkins has never really replicated the sort of feats he enjoyed there, and that could be a concern for Middlesbrough.

"Adkins will no doubt provide a steady head at The Riverside, but you wonder whether he is the right man to take them back to the Premier League."

George Brooks

"I’m not sure Adkins would be the right appointment for Middlesbrough to be honest.

"Don't get me wrong, he's a very good manager and has achieved success in the Championship before.

"My concern is that it may take time for him to achieve success at the Riverside and Middlesbrough need someone who can make an impact straight away and win promotion next season.

"It will be interesting to see who they go for and I get the impression that Boro fans wouldn't be overly pleased with Adkins as their new boss either."
