Brentford manager Thomas Frank is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the coming season, having finished the last campaign in 11th spot just 10 points off the play-off places.

Southampton striker Sam Gallagher is a transfer target, according to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (June 23, Page 60).

Gallagher only played four times for Saints last season, having previously spent three loan spells away from St Mary's since arriving at the club in 2013 at MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City.

So would Gallagher prove a good addition at Griffin Park?

"I'm not sure about this.

"Gallagher does have experience in the Championship from his previous loan moves with Blackburn annd Birmingham, but he wasn't exactly prolific with either side.

"When you compare that with the record of someone like Neal Maupay, this feels like it would something of a step down for the Bees if Gallagher were to be brought in as a replacement for the Frenchman if the reports of a move to the Premier League materialise.

"Given the size of the fees that are being reported for the likes of Benrahma and Maupay, it feels like Brentford could spend bigger on someone better if that money does come into the club."

“It’s certainly the sort of signing I can see them making. Brentford tend to take players whose stock is low, or who haven’t been proven. They sprinkle some Griffin Park magic on them and sell them on for a fee.

“Gallagher impressed me when he was at Birmingham and Blackburn. He looked vibrant and exciting, full of potential and not out of his depth in the senior game.

“He’s not going to get his change at St Mary’s, so why not make a move to a level he knows.

“I think with regular game time he’ll learn and grow. That could make him a big player for Brentford. He’s got class, his England Under 20 honours show that, but he needs to convert that potential into senior experience.”
