Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis could go head-to-head with Championship rival Dean Smith with both Boro and Aston Villa keen on CSKA Sofia winger Kiril Despodov, according to The Mirror (January 6, Page 67).
The 22-year-old has had a good season so far with eight goals in 16 league appearances and two goals in five Europa League qualifying matches.
So would Despodov be good for Middlesbrough?
Boro do need some flair up front, but does Pulis know how best to use good players?
I’m not convinced. Braithwaite and Assombalonga being prime examples.
They’re good players who have stagnated in the rigid Boro set up.
Despodov could be exactly the same sort of player.
Despodov could be a decent player as Boro and Pulis use wide-men a lot.
However, do I think that he is better than what they have? It’s up for debate. Boro have good young wingers, let’s see more of them.
It could be worth the gamble.
Boro certainly need a bit more attacking prowess in their side in order to get themselves back into the automatic promotion picture.
There is no guarantee it would pay off but why not try it?
