Tranmere Rovers are believed to be interested in signing Mansfield Town forward Danny Rose this summer, according to The Sun journalist Phil Cadden.

Micky Mellon's side won promotion from League Two via the play-offs last season, but will be on the lookout for a new striker this summer, with James Norwood recently leaving for Ipswich Town on a free transfer.

Having also been linked with the signing of free-agent James Vaughan, it is believed that Danny Rose is on Tranmere's radar, with Salford and Bradford City also being credited with an interest.

The 25-year-old scored five goals for the Stags last term, but the season before, he scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Nottinghamshire side, as they narrowly missed out on promotion.

Here, we discuss whether Rose would be a good signing for Tranmere...

George Harbey

"This is a bit of a mixed one for me, as he has somewhat lost his form in front of goal over the past year.

"Rose was excellent for Mansfield in the 2017/18 campaign, but for some reason, he fell out of favour under David Flitcroft last term, with Tyler Walker grabbing the headlines.

"Is he good enough for League One? I'd say that he is, but if Tranmere are putting all their eggs in one basket to sign Rose as a replacement for Norwood, then I'd have my concerns.

"He is a similar type of player to Norwood, but I don't think he's an upgrade at all."

Gary Hutchinson

"I’m not so sure this is what Tranmere need.

"Norwood played at the head of a 4-4-1-1 at times, but I can’t see Rose sitting up top as a lone striker. He’s nippy, good on the ball but I’m probe to questioning if he could hold it up sufficiently to give Tranmere time to clear ranks when they’re under pressure.

"Plus, he’s unproven in League One, so it would be a gamble. He’s done well in League Two already, which is surely a more sensible move.

"I just think he’s the wrong type of striker to fill James Norwood’s boots. However, if he’s being brought in to sit behind and run from deep then maybe it’s a more sensible move. It’s still a risk though, given his experience."

Toby Wilding

"I'm not convinced by this one for Tranmere.

"The departure of James Norwood to Ipswich means that it is essential Tranmere bring in another goalscorer in order to have any hope of competing in League One next season, but Rose's record doesn't come anywhere near close to that of the man he would be tasked with replacing.

"You also feel that Mansfield will not be willing to let Rose go to cheaply, so it may be difficult for Tranmere to secure his services, particularly given the importance of strengthening their squad in several areas as they look to compete in League One following back to back promotions in the last two seasons.

"It seems therefore that Tranmere may be better in looking for an alternative attacking option in the coming weeks."
