If recent reports are to be believed, Stoke City are one of a number of Championship clubs interested in signing Celtic winger Jonny Hayes in the January transfer window.

According to TEAMtalk, Stoke are keen on signing the 32-year-old in January, who is out of contract at Celtic at the end of the season.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon is keen to get Hayes tied down to a new contract, but the winger is thought to be considering his options - which could open the door for Stoke to make their move.

Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Swansea City are also thought to be keen on the player, who has scored one goal in eight appearances for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season.

In the latest FLW Six Pointer, we assess Stoke's interest in Hayes in more detail and discuss whether he'd be a good signing for the Potters...

First of all, do you think Hayes would be a good signing for Stoke?

"I'm being honest, I'm not sure he would be. Hayes has done reasonably well in Scotland over the past few years, but I'm not convinced he'd be a good signing for Stoke.

"Don't get me wrong, he's a good player and he could turn out to be a decent signing on a free transfer, but I think Stoke would be taking a risk by signing him.

"He's into his third season at Celtic now and it's fair to say that he's hardly set the world alight since he arrived at Parkhead. He hasn't been able to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up and hasn't contributed anywhere near enough goals or assists."

Do you think Stoke need him?

"I'm not sure they do. He's a decent player, but he's not in amazing form at the moment and he doesn't have a lot of experience in the Championship.

"I definitely think they'd be taking a risk by signing him and you could say that he's a very similar type of player to James McClean.

"Given that McClean is still at the club, it would make little sense for Stoke to bring in Hayes.

"He's also 32 now as well and will be 33 by the start of next season - he wouldn't be the best option in the long-term and I think Stoke would be better of targeting younger players."

Do you think Hayes would benefit from a move to Stoke?

"It's difficult to say really. Even though they've really struggled so far this season, Stoke have still got some very talented attacking players in their squad.

"Hayes might have a lot of experience in Scotland, but he hasn't played in the Championship for over a decade. He'd need to adapt to the league very quickly, or he could see has chances of regular first-team football become very limited.

"Despite the fact he hasn't started that many games this season, Neil Lennon seems to view him as an important part of his plans at Celtic. With this in mind, perhaps he'd be better of remaining at Parkhead."

Do you think that Hayes would be able to adapt to the Championship?

"To be fair, I think he probably would. He's an international player for the Republic of Ireland and he's got plenty of experience in the Scottish top flight with Aberdeen and Celtic.

"Even though he hasn't played in the Championship for over a decade, he should still have enough experience as a player to adapt to the challenges of the division.

"He's a direct and aggressive player, so he should be able to adapt to the physical challenges that come with playing in such a competitive league."

Would Celtic allow him to leave?

"At the end of the day, they'd have no choice. Hayes is out of contract at the end of the season and if the club don't get him tied down to a new deal soon, there's every chance he could leave.

"With several Championship clubs interested in him, there's every chance that he could be tempted by a new challenge.

"If recent reports are to be believed, Neil Lennon seems to be quite keen on the Hayes and wants the player to sign a new contract, but the club need to get him tied down sooner rather than later."

If not Hayes, who should Stoke turn to in January?

"There's no doubt that Michael O'Neill needs to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window if he's to turn things around at Stoke.

"With that said, I don't think Hayes is the answer. I think O'Neill would be better off focusing on improving other positions such as left-back and striker.

"He's an experienced manager though and he did a great job with Northern Ireland, so with the right backing from the club in January, he could be able to turn things around at the Bet365 Stadium."
