Sunderland manager Jack Ross expects to lose his top scorer Josh Maja to French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, according to Sky Sports.

The 20-year-old's current contract is due to run out at the end of this season and although he has been offered a new deal, he's set to join the French club.

So will Bordeaux prove to be a good home for Maja's development?

Louie Chandler

"This is a real surprise.

"I won't pretend to know a lot about Bordeaux and their reputation for developing players but I would have liked to see him stay in England.

"Ligue 1 is far from the most competitive and for £3million plenty of clubs should be jumping at the chance."

Gary Hutchinson

“I’m incredibly surprised by this.

“I thought the West Ham loan back was the best deal for him.

“France isn’t a great league, outside the top two or three the standard is average.

“It looks a good move, nice area and culture, but as a player I’m shocked he feels this is the best way to progress.”

Jay Taylor

“I would be lying if I said I knew about the Bordeaux way of life – so I am unsure as to whether this will be a good move for him or not.

“It will be a culture change and a shock to the system he will have to get used to if he goes.

“If he gets regular game time and can adapt, then it could be a great move, you see other English talent going abroad, and they’ve done well for themselves, so why not Maja.”
