Barnsley had a poor season last year and as a result, suffered relegation to League One

Naturally with relegation, has come losses in the squad too with Cauley Woodrow having already left to go to Luton Town.

However, the Tykes have faced further loss now as last season's top scored Carlton Morris has also left the club to join the Hatters.

Therefore, we asked FLW's Barnsley fan pundit Joe Beardsall for his verdict on the player's departure: "I'm absolutely gutted that Carlton Morris has left if I'm being totally honest.

"He's the one player that I hoped would stay more than anyone else.

"I'm half surprised and half not surprised. I'm not surprised that other clubs wanted him because he is strong, he's a leader, he gives it absolutely everything, he never gives up. Even on the day we were getting relegated he was still fighting for every ball, trying desperately to make something happen to keep us in the Championship.

"He's a cracking guy with an amazing attitude and I wish him all the best so not a surprise whatsoever that Championship clubs like Luton were looking at him and others interested as well.

"What I am a bit surprised in is the fact that after letting Cauley Woodrow go to Luton, that we've let Carlton Morris go as well.

"I presume the club have got a plan behind the scenes but it is worrying as a fan because Carlton Morris, Cauley Woodrow were our two main goal threats. We haven't been blessed with goals last season anyway so to lose your two main goal threats at the start of the season is a worry for any fan.

"We're now going to have to sign a couple of strikers for me to try and fill that void. The guys currently in the building, you've got Aiden Marsh who's a young lad who's showing a lot of promise, scored his first goal at the back end of last season and I think he's going to have a really big season for us and do really well but not fair to put it just on his shoulders.

"And then you've got a couple of others players in there, Aaron Leya Iseka is second and Devante Cole who have talent but have not been able to show it on a consistent basis and didn't really do it for us last season.

"From a Barnsley fan point of view, we've got to replace them, we've got to get serious firepower through the door to try and give us a chance at trying to get at least in the play-offs, ideally getting back to the Championship at the first time of asking so for me, the priority now is going to have to be to see who we can get to replace them.

"But like I said, just really gutted that Morris is gone but wish him all the best because I think he's going to be a fantastic player for Luton. If you take his injures out of the mix, he is an amazing player who will play in the Premier League."

The Verdict:

This departure is a massive blow for Barnsley ahead of the new season and as Joe points out, any strength in attack shown by the Tykes last season has now gone from the club putting them in a tough position going forward.

Morris has shown signs of quality for Barnsley and as part of a strong team at Luton, you would expect him to contribute and play well to have an impact in the Hatters side.

You can't blame Barnsley fans for being gutted about this departure, but their attention will now have to turn to finding suitable replacements who can help their efforts in League One.
