With just over a week to go until the start of the Championship season, there is much excitement around the country - but not much of that is at Bramall Lane.

After a successful 2019-20 Premier League campaign, Sheffield United suffered from a serious case of second season syndrome and suffered a convincing relegation, finishing bottom of the pack with just 23 points.

It wasn't close to being a record low points haul thanks to a half-decent run of form towards the end of the season, however the Blades failed to fire and it cost Chris Wilder his job.

A new era will begin back in-front of the fans in a few weeks though as Slavisa Jokanovic has taken over the United hot-seat - but things seemed to have stalled in terms of transfer business this summer.

Whilst there's rumours of the likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Sander Berge being big-money departures, no movement has happened on either front and as for incomings there hasn't been a single one so far, which seems to suggests that the club need to raise funds to sign players.

The lack of transfer activity is alarming to former Blades favourite Paddy Kenny, who has admitted that it doesn't seem right for the club to just stand still in the window with the season about to begin.

“I’m a bit concerned. You like to get your squad together before the season starts," Kenny said, per Football Insider.

“But these times are strange and I don’t think a lot of teams have been very active.

A lot of teams have things that need to change but everyone is taking their time.

“With the financial problems behind the scenes and Covid over the last 18 months, it is difficult.

"Normally you’d want to know what you’ve got to play with in pre-season but it’s not looking like that at the moment.

I’m sure there will be comings and going once the season has already started now as well. That squad will need refreshing.”

The Verdict

Kenny is right in the sense that many Championship teams have not been very active so far - some of that has been imposed by the EFL through restrictions and other clubs have had to get their house in order before pressing on with deals.

There's not really much of an excuse though for Sheffield United not to be strengthening - they will have money from last year's Premier League television deal and there's positions that need bolstering with a new left-sided centre-back needed due to Jack O'Connell's setback.

Slavisa Jokanovic must be frustrated already with the lack of progress and if they're waiting to cash in on Berge to start doing deals, then the club could be waiting a while as that saga could last until the end of the window.
