Barnsley are facing a crucial summer transfer period where they will need to ensure they make the right signings to help continue their momentum under Valerien Ismael.

One of the biggest tasks facing the Tykes this summer is how to replace the sizeable loss of forward Daryl Dike following his impressive loan spell at Oakwell.

Ismael’s side have now launched a move for a player they feel can be that replacement for Dike, with Barnsley having made an offer in the region of £1.5 million to Watford for their physically imposing striker Stipe Perica.

It is believed negotiations are ongoing between both parties and that Watford are open to selling him just a year after they brought him in from Udinese. That comes after he scored just once in 16 Championship games last term.

With Barnsley launching a move for Perica, we asked our FLW writers whether they feel it is the right signing for them to make this summer…

This could be a very smart signing.

Stipe Perica is a decent player who has a proven track record of scoring goals in Belgium and Italy.

While his role at Watford last term wasn't huge, there was still enough there to suggest that he can be a good player at this level.

Barnsley are looking for a powerful attacker to lead the line and in the 25-year-old you have a player who would fit the bill perfectly from that point of view.

Providing that Watford were willing to sell and that terms could be agreed, this could prove to be a very shrewd deal and one that could help Valerien Ismael's side as they try to recreate their form from last term once again.

I’m a bit baffled by this one to be honest.

Barnsley obviously need to bring in a striker or two this summer, especially with a permanent move for Daryl Dike looking far too pricey and hence, looking uncertain.

They’ve already brought in Devante Cole which raised eyebrows, and a seven-figure swoop for Perica would also be another surprising move.

Perica hasn’t really showed any signs of promise since moving to Watford last summer, starting only twice in the Championship and scoring one goal in 18 appearances.

But clearly, Barnsley see something in him. He is a strong, tall centre-forward, who could replace Dike’s physicality and power up top.

This could turn out to be a shrewd bit of business by the Tykes.

Perica hasn't had much of a chance to impress with the Watford first-team in the last year, and he'll be keen to make a name for himself in English football at the earliest of opportunities.

Barnsley are in need of adding another forward to their side this summer, with Daryl Dike returning to Orlando City from his loan spell with the Tykes.

Perica could be the ideal player to replace him if he can adjust to the high-intensity style of play at Oakwell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Watford were tempted to sell him either, as he'll be down the pecking order in Xisco Munoz's plans, as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
