Emiliano Martinez has been outstanding for Reading since joining on loan from Arsenal in January and if the Championship club have any ambition, they should try to sign the goalkeeper on a permanent deal in the summer.

The 26-year-old arrived at the Madejski Stadium in January, having made just one start for the Gunners this season in the Europa League.

The Argentine has gone on to make 15 appearances for the Royals, keeping three clean sheets in the Championship and helping the team pick up some vital points in their battle for survival.

The shot-stopper has already established himself as one of the better goalkeepers in the second-tier and he has the potential to get even better.

Having arrived at Reading with the team in the relegation zone, Martinez has helped to turn the team's fortunes around.

If the club have any ambition, they should try to sign the goalkeeper in the summer, as he approaches a crossroads in his career.

Martinez is determined to make it at Arsenal, but admitted during a recent interview with Goal that he is unwilling to stay at the Emirates Stadium any longer without a guarantee of first-team football.

Bernd Leno is currently the first-choice at Arsenal, with back-up goalkeeper Petr Cech having announced his retirement at the end of this season.

Unai Emery may want Martinez as his back-up goalkeeper for next season, but it is unlikely that he will replace Leno as the Spaniard's first choice.

At this stage of his career, it is important for Martinez to be playing first-team football and he may want to call time on his Arsenal career and find a new club.

After his impressive performances for the Royals this season, he may well have plenty of options to consider, but he need look no further than Reading.

With his future at Arsenal uncertain, Reading should try to take advantage of the situation and lure the goalkeeper away from the Emirates with the offer of guaranteed first-team football.

He is clearly a talented goalkeeper and is more than good enough to be the first-choice for a Championship team.

A move to Reading would make perfect for both the player and the club and if they have any ambition, they should make signing him one of their biggest priorities in the summer.
