Former Nottingham Forest defender Molla Wague is a transfer target for Greek Super League side Panathinaikos this summer, according to reports from Greek media outlet Sportdog.

The 28-year-old signed for Forest on loan from Udinese in January and went on to become a key player for Martin O'Neill's side in the latter stages of the campaign.

The central defender made 11 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals as well as forming a solid defensive partnership with Alex Milosevic and Jack Robinson towards the end of the season.

Wague is believed to be out of contract at Udinese in the summer, and it remains to be seen whether Forest are interested in re-signing the Mali defender on a permanent basis in the next couple of months.

But their chances of securing him on a permanent deal have now decreased, with Panathinaikos believed to be keen on the defender.

Forest had plenty of key players on loan last season, and the club will no doubt be looking to re-sign the likes of Sam Byram and Jack Colback from West Ham and Newcastle this summer.

The Verdict

I think that Wague would be a very good signing for Forest, and they cannot afford to let Panathinaikos come in and snatch him from their grasp.

He was superb in the last three games of the season, and with a full pre-season under his belt, he could grow into a very good player indeed.

After keeping three clean sheets with a back-three formation, O'Neill needs to stick by his guns and stick with this system next season.
