‘If it is only £3m then Brighton have got a bargain’ – 22-year-old set for switch: Opinion

New Brighton manager Graham Potter is mounting a raid on his south coast neighbours, with the Seagulls on the verge of signing Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke for £3m, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Clarke, 22, enjoyed an impressive season at Pompey last season making 60 appearances and sweeping the board at the club’s Player of the Season awards, whilst also being named man of the match in Pompey’s Checkatrade Trophy triumph over Sunderland.

But is Clarke worth the £3million asking price?

We discuss……..

Kealan Hughes

“Definitely, and if it is only £3m then Brighton have got a bargain.

“Clarke is only 22 yet he plays like a seasoned pro. He’s so composed on the ball but destructive when it comes to the basics of defending.

“He is destined for the Premier League and it looks like his time has come to make the move. If he continues to improve like he has then he could be worth countless millions in the future.”

Jacob Potter

“In today’s market, he’s definitely worth it.

“He’s a young centre-back who I think has a significant amount of potential.

“I really hope that Brighton give him the game time he needs to develop at the highest level possible as he’s certainly capable of achieving great things.

“If he can adjust to life in the Premier League quickly, then his price tag will rise rapidly in my opinion.”

George Brooks

“Clarke is a very good defender and was outstanding for Portsmouth last season, as Kenny Jackett’s side reached the play-off semi-finals.

“He’s a good age and has a fair amount of experience, so I think £3million is about right in today’s market.

“I think he’d be a good signing for Brighton and he would be able to provide good cover and competition for Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk next season.

“I’m sure Pompey will be reluctant to lose one of their key players, but £3million is not bad for a player with one year left on his contract.”

Gary Hutchinson

“I’d say yes, but lots of Pompey fans I know think it’s too much.

“He seems to be a player admired more from the outside than the inside.

“Whenever I’ve seen him he’s looked class. He’s young too and has potential growth value.

“In my opinion, £3m is about right when you balance potential and ability.”
