Sunderland's search for a striker looks set to go to the wire, with Gillingham's Tom Eaves one of the players thought to be on their radar.

That's according to reporter Pete O'Rourke, who revealed that the target man is interesting the Black Cats, along with Bristol City forward Mo Eisa.

And, that wouldn't be a surprise as the 27-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season so far with the Gills, weighing in with 14 goals.

However, he is out of contract in the summer, so the League One side will understand that this could be their last chance to get a fee for the former Bolton man.

As well as scoring goals, the target man has been very good with his back to goal and can bring others into play, so he would give Jack Ross a different option at the Stadium of Light.

So, would he be a good signing for the Wearside outfit?

Our writers take a look...

Alfie Burns

"Eaves has scored a lot of goals this season and is a player that improves Sunderland.

"For me, he’s ready to make the step up with Sunderland if they win promotion, so in that sense it’s ideal.

"Time is running out, though, the Black Cats need to get moving."

Louie Chandler

"This would be a great signing.

"They really need to get a striker in soon and are fast running out of time, but if they manage to get Eaves then that will be mission accomplished.

"He is a proven and ruthless League One goalscorer."

Gary Hutchinson

"Eaves is a good centre forward, mobile and commanding.

"He knows where the goal is too, so he’d be a great signing, he’s got Championship quality about him.

"Additionally, he could be cheap too with his contract up in August."
