Football League World's Barnsley fan pundit Dan Sykes has issued his verdict on new Tykes boss Gerhard Struber and revealed he believes he is ideal for developing the young squad at the club.

It was announced yesterday that Struber had left his post at Austrian top-flight club Wolfsberger AC to make the switch to Oakwell, signing on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The 42-year-old coach has a tough job ahead of him, with Barnsley bottom of the Championship and having picked up just one win all season.

Sykes indicated he was pleased with the appointment, particularly because the Austrian coach could help to develop the Tykes young side.

He explained: "I think Gerhard Struber is both a good signing for the club and a good signing for the players.

"His background from the RB Salzburg set up indicates that he will be ideal for developing our young team, and his ambition to leave his home country to chase exposure in a more competitive league shows that he has a great belief in himself and his coaching skills.

"When it was announced that we were actually appointing him I think the majority of fans saw it as a coup and are relatively positive about his arrival.

"It will be interesting to see the dynamic of his coaching team as ex-Arsenal left-back Matt Rose has been appointed as first-team coach."

Struber's first game in charge will come against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday.

A win could see the Tykes move off the bottom of the table, should Stoke City lose to Wigan Athletic.
