Preston North End want £10m for defender Ben Davies as Celtic weigh up a move for the player, as per Football Insider.

And, it's a price-tag that Alan Hutton believes Celtic should avoid, as quoted by Football Insider: “There’s no way Celtic are paying £10million for him, no chance, so if that’s what they’re after, Celtic will walk away.

If it goes on until January and there’s a chance of doing something then, then of course they will and then it’s down to the player – does he want to stay in England or does he fancy his chances up at a team like Celtic, European football?

“If we’re talking £10million here, right now, I would say there was absolutely no chance.”

So, what do you make of the £10m valuation for Davies? Should Celtic pursue?

I’d get after him at that price, it’s not bad at all.

Davies is a top centre-back in the Championship and someone that you feel could play at a higher level. There’s not much interest in England at the moment, but you’ve got to feel he’s got enough about him to play in Scotland.

The fee isn’t steep at all. It doesn’t matter what the contract situation of the player is, when there’s a player of that quality available, you pay the fee.

If it was a striker, you’d see it as a snip, but because it’s a defender Celtic are perhaps turning their nose up at it?

He improves their squad and has his best years ahead of him.

It shouldn’t require too much thought.

Celtic should definitely go and get him for that price.

I actually think that they should count themselves lucky to have the opportunity of signing a top quality Championship defender for that sort of price given his contract situation at Deepdale, as it is much lower than what they’d usually pay in my view.

Davies is a solid, left-sided, ball-playing defender who has really come up leaps and bounds at Preston over the past couple of seasons, and we’ve seen him develop into a real leader in the heart of Alex Neil’s defence.

He’s only 25, too, so moving to Celtic at this age and winning trophy after trophy year in, year out could help him become even better and it would be an excellent opportunity for him on a personal level.

Celtic already have some quality defenders at the club in Shane Duffy and Kristoffer Ajer, but every successful side needs competition and Davies would bring that in abundance.

Players like him, for that sort of price, are hard to come by in this day and age.

There are better options out there.

Davies has been a steady option to have for Preston, and I'm not surprised to see other clubs registering their interest in striking a deal to land his signature.

But I'm not sure he'd be quite good enough for Celtic, and I'm almost certain that he wouldn't be a regular starter for the Bhoys.

He's definitely not worth £10million in my eyes, and there are much better and safer alternatives out there for Neil Lennon's side.

If he isn't going to be a regular starter, then there is no point in paying £10million for Davies.

I'd steer clear of this one if I was Celtic.
