The hunt is on to find a new manager at Cardiff City following the departure of Neil Warnock earlier in the week, but one current manager to rule himself out of the running is Newport County boss Michael Flynn.

Despite featuring in the betting for the vacancy and the fact he was seen at the Cardiff City versus Bristol City clash at the weekend, Flynn told the Argus: “There’s absolutely not one bit of significance in it whatsoever,

“I’m the Newport manager and I’ve agreed a new deal, so there’s nothing to say on that."

But would Flynn have been a good appointment if he had agreed to move to Cardiff?

"I'd have been a big fan if this happened.

"The work Flynn has done with Newport has been outstanding and it's no surprise to see he has been linked with a host of jobs higher up the Football League.

"He is a young, hungry coach that wants to prove himself and that would fit the bill for Cardiff right now and he is someone the fans would get behind.

"Of course, there would have been risks attached to his appointment as we've seen plenty of managers fail to make the step up to the Championship in the past.

"But, it would have been interesting to see how Flynn would've coped and I think he would've been a good fit for the Bluebirds."

Josh Cole

“The Bluebirds ought to be a little bit disappointed with the news that Flynn has ruled himself out of contention for the vacancy at the Cardiff City Stadium.

“Since taking over at Newport County in 2017, the 39-year-old has helped transform the club’s fortunes and was unlucky not to lead his side to promotion to League One earlier this year.

“Having made a solid start to the current campaign under Flynn, the Exiles will be delighted that he has opted to stay at Rodney Parade instead of moving to the Welsh capital.

“For Cardiff’s sake, it is imperative that they appoint a manager who can reinvigorate their players who are still suffering from the aftermath of last season’s relegation from the Premier League.”

"I think Flynn could have been an excellent appointment for Cardiff if he chose to replace Neil Warnock in South Wales.

"It would have been a massive coup to lure him away from Newport County given the level of jobs he has turned down before, and the new contract he signed in the summer.

"He is a passionate man and a real man-motivator, and he has got his side playing some of the best football in League Two despite operating on a shoestring budget.

"He has a real affinity with the fans, and he could have really reunited Cardiff fans with the club."
