Sunderland are seeking a return for Dion Sanderson to the club this summer.

According to the Mail, the Black Cats are hoping to bring the defender back to the Stadium of Light from Wolves.

FLW’s Sunderland fan pundit Jack Austwicke believes that the 22-year old would be a good addition to the side.

Sanderson initially joined the Black Cats on loan in 2020-21, where he featured 26 times in League One as the side earned a 4th place finish.

But loan spells at Birmingham City and QPR this season saw him ply his trade in the Championship.

However, with Sunderland now promoted to the second division, perhaps a move back to the North of England could be on the cards.

Austwicke believes that Sanderson has the tools to perform well in Alex Neil’s side and that he could play a role in helping the team succeed at this level.

“When Dion Sanderson was with us here last season, he was a very, very good solid centre back,” Austwicke told Football League World.

“I enjoyed watching him, he was good on the ball, good at carrying the team out and quick as well, which is a trait that’s quite rare in centre backs, but it’s very valuable.

“Obviously since his loan, he’s been on loan twice this season just gone to Birmingham and QPR, Championship level.

“And I’m led to believe he’s done really really well there so I’d definitely be intrigued to take him back at Sunderland next season.

“Hopefully he could help us do well in the Championship.”

The Wolves player featured 26 times in the league this season across two clubs, and performed well despite the change in scenery.

It is now apparent that his parent club may look to sell the player on a permanent basis in order to raise funds for a possible squad rebuild at the Molineux this summer.

The Verdict

This would be a very solid signing for Sunderland to make this summer, with Sanderson having gained good experience in the Championship this season.

A permanent move away from Wolves is probably the best move the defender can make given it is unlikely he will break into the first team under Bruno Lage.

Sunderland will be hoping to do more than simply stay in the division next season, with the Black Cats ultimately aiming for promotion again in the near future.

That means they will be an attractive prospect for young talent such as Sanderson, which makes the Stadium of Light a good fit for the next step in his career.
