Iconic Millwall striker and most recently Shrewsbury Town frontman Steve Morison has today announced his retirement from the professional game.

The 36-year-old has officially decided to hang up his boots in order to move into coaching after an eventful career throughout the EFL, though his time with Millwall remains the most iconic.

Throughout his time at the Den, and accross two spells, he racked up over 330 appearances, scoring 92 goals and providing a further 66 assists, although his most iconic moment by far came at Wembley.

In the dying seconds of their League One play-off final clash with Bradford City, Morison found himself in the right place at the right time, prodding home a Lee Gregory flick on to send the Lions' fans wild.

It ensured his status as a club legend, going on to play a big part in their establishment in the second tier as well.

This summer saw him leave for a new challenge, signing for Shrewsbury Town on a short-term deal in League One, but after just eight appearances and no goals, called time on his spell in Shropshure.

He will now link up with League Two side Northampton Town in order to continue to progress as a coach.

The verdict

I know the relationship between Morison and Millwall fans started become slightly frayed before the end of his time at The Den, but he will always be remembered incredibly fondly.

That goal alone against Bradford should be enough for every Millwall fan to want him to succeed in the future as a coach and who knows? He may find himself back with the Lions someday.
