Ian Wright reflects on famous Okocha trick v Arsenal that embarrassed midfielder

Jay-Jay Okocha is perhaps one of the best players to have ever worn a Bolton Wanderers shirt and Arsenal hero Ian Wright has reflected on a time where he embarrassed Ray Parlour whilst playing against the Gunners.

Wanderers could certainly do with a few players like Okocha these days with the situation they find themselves in, with the Nigerian capable of the outrageous and sublime during the Trotters’ spell in the Premier League.

Jay-Jay is just a nickname?

Indeed, quoted by the Match of the Day top 10 podcast, Wright reflected on the ability he had and a time where he pulled off some fine skill to get the beating of Ray Parlour.

Wright said:

“If you asked the Bolton fans and his team-mates they would say he played with a freedom and expression that was so entertaining. I saw him flick the ball over his head in the corner with Ray Parlour. We see Neymar doing that!”

The Verdict

Okocha’s days at Bolton coincided with one of the Trotters’ best periods in recent history, as they played in the Premier League and UEFA Cup during the first decade of the 21st century.

Things have gone downhill considerably since that time but the hope will be that they can return to such a stage in the future, with players as good as Okocha once again donning the white jersey.

For now, Trotters fans will have to reminisce on the Nigerian’s exploits, though, with plenty of clips of him easy to find online.
