Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has suggested that Patrick Bamford needs to not feel any fear over recent missed chances and continue to get into goal scoring positions to help get him firing again for Leeds.

Bamford has managed to register 12 goals in 30 Championship appearances for Leeds so far this campaign, but the striker could and probably should have a lot more than that tally at this stage of the campaign, had he not been guilty of missing a host of presentable opportunities in front of goal.

Marcelo Bielsa has brought in Jean-Jevin Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig to provide some competition for Bamford up front, and the striker could be needing to improve his ability to convert chances, if he Iis going to be able to remain as the Whites’ first choice up front for the rest of the campaign.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Leeds United’s January signings?

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on the Monday Night Club (quotes sourced via Leeds Live), Wright insisted that Bamford needs to continue to get into the right positions and that the forward needs to have belief in his ability to take chances.

He said: "The pressure he is under with Leeds wanting to come up, it’s massive. The weight of expectation, especially after what happened last season, is massive, but you can only do the same things in training as long as you’re getting chances created for you.

"We’ve seen the amount of chances he’s missed and you just hope he can start converting, but all he can do is get back in the right positions, near post, far post, hit the target and hope you can start converting a few.

"The problem you get is if you’re afraid to get into those positions and miss those chances, if you’re afraid to do that then you’ve got no chance."

The verdict

Wright knows all about the pressures of leading the line and being tasked with being the main goal scorer for a massive club, where huge pressure is placed on the strikers to perform consistently in front of goal, and Bamford would do well to take on board his latest advice.

Bamford on the face of it is not having too bad a season considering he has already netted 12 league goals, but there are other strikers in the Championship such as Ollie Watkins and Aleksander Mitrovic who are on 20 goals and have shown much more composure in front of goal when presented with chances.

The striker needs to start firing again if Leeds are going to have any chance of recovering their form and getting their season back on track, and he needs to start converting the many chances that have been coming his way, although against Nottingham Forest last time he struggled for the first real time to find a big chance during the game.

Considering that he will now be being pushed strongly by Augustin for his place in the side, Bamford will be needing to swiftly get back to his best in front of goal, or he will risk being placed on the bench by Bielsa for the rest of the campaign.
