Ian Maatsen pens message to Coventry City supporters ahead of his return to Chelsea

Ian Maatsen has taken to Instagram to thank Coventry City’s fans for the support that they have provided during his loan spell at the club.

The full-back is set to return to Chelsea when his temporary stint at the Coventry Building Society Arena officially expires at the end of May.

During his time with the Sky Blues, Maatsen managed to make considerable strides in terms of his development as he featured regularly for the club in the Championship.

The 20-year-old played 40 games at this level whilst he also represented Coventry in the League Cup and the FA Cup.

With the transfer window set to open next month, it will be intriguing to see what the future holds for Maatsen.

According to a report from journalist Simon Phillips, Borussia Dortmund are believed to be interested in making a move for the full-back.

Maatsen made his final appearance for Coventry in their 1-1 draw with Stoke City last weekend.

Reflecting on his time with the Sky Blues on Instagram, Maatsen has admitted that he appreciated every minute of his spell.

The Dutchman posted: “I want to thank everyone at @coventrycityofficial, the players, staff and the fans have made me feel great and helped me develop as a player.

The Verdict

When you consider that Maatsen managed to produce a host of encouraging displays for Coventry, it will be interesting to see whether the club opts to draft in a replacement for him this summer.

Although Coventry are already able to call upon the services of Jake Bidwell, the 29-year-old could potentially benefit from some added-competition at left-back.

As well as providing four direct goal contributions in the Championship, Maatsen managed to make 1.9 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game as he averaged a SofaScore match rating of 6.80 at this level.

In order to prevent his development from stalling, Maatsen may need to secure another move away from Chelsea in the coming months as he is unlikely to overtake Ben Chilwell and Marcus Alonso in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
