Ian Holloway backs long-time old foe for massive Aston Villa rebuild job

Mick McCarthy has been backed for the vacant Aston Villa job by Ian Holloway, report Sky Sports

The current Ipswich Town boss was mooted as a surprise potential candidate for the job at Villa Park, due to his vast amounts of experience in the Championship.

With it being imperative the crisis club find their way back into the top tier, they are understood to be eyeing candidates who have shown an ability to mastermind promotion pushes.

The former Republic of Ireland manager has done exactly that twice, with both Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is thought to have entered talks with the crisis club, though Holloway is backing the Tractor Boys chief.

‘Mick McCarthy should be on the shortlist for the next Aston Villa job, without a shadow of a doubt,’ stated the ex-Blackpool and QPR manager.

‘I think Ipswich will do well to hold onto McCarthy this summer. Someone with his credibility and know-how will be hot property.’

Following the sacking of Remi Garde, a relatively bizarre appointment for a side looking to escape relegation at the time, Villa seem to be turning their heads more toward an experienced option.

McCarthy has impressed at Portman Road on a pretty small budget in comparison to other teams, falling just short of the playoffs while bringing through talented young players.

Their closing two games offer the chance to finish the season strongly, hosting the already relegated MK Dons on Saturday in Suffolk.

Has McCarthy done enough at Ipswich to be considered for such a big job? Would you, as Villa fans, be happy to see him steady the ship?
