Ian Harte kicked back to watch Leeds United’s famous victory over Arsenal in the 2002/03 season last night, admitting on social media that he was loving the throwback clash.

Leeds had endured a tough season on the back of David O’Leary’s departure, with relegation a real possibility heading into the final two games of the season.

Under the lead of Peter Reid, Leeds headed to Highbury to take on Arsenal on the penultimate weekend, meeting the title-chasing Gunners.

QUIZ: Can you name Leeds United’s last 15 managers?

Harry Kewell fired Leeds into an early lead, only for Thierry Henry to hit back. Harte would then guide a long-range free-kick beyond David Seaman – scoring at Arsenal for a third consecutive season.

Dennis Bergkamp levelled things up again for Arsenal, but Mark Viduka’s curling effort on 88 minutes secured a 3-2 win for Leeds, who retained their Premier League status. For Arsenal, they lost the title to Manchester United.

Last night, Sky Sports showed full footage of the game, which led Harte to Twitter, where he shared his delight at watching such memorable footage back:

The following season, Leeds were relegated from the Premier League and haven’t returned to the top table of English football since.

The Verdict

The years prior to 2002/03 had seen Leeds battling for the Premier League title and European trophies, but the win at Arsenal is memorable in its own way.

The side Arsene Wenger had built was on the verge of becoming ‘Invincible’, so a win at Highbury was not to be sniffed at.

Harte and many other of his teammates are likely to have enjoyed last night’s rewind.
