Leeds United will be picking through the bones of this season, having failed to make a return to the English top flight, despite being in and around the top of the table for the whole campaign, ultimately going out via a play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County.

Of the many statistics to come from the season, it is full-back Gaetano Berardi who has the unenviable record of joining former Whites striker Alan Smith with the most red-cards in Leeds United history, with seven.

Smith picked up seven red cards over the course of 211 appearances for Leeds, as well as an enormous 46 yellow cards, while Berardi achieved his seven in 130 outings for the Whites and also has 18 yellow cards.

So what is the verdict on Berardi's record equaling tally of red cards for Leeds?

We discuss........

Ben Lang

"This is a difficult situation for the club.

"Berardi’s passion makes him the kind of player Leeds fans would want at Elland Road, but his red cards tally is a serious problem.

"He plays with his heart on his sleeve, but the red card against Derby is evidence of the detrimental effect his full-blooded playing style can have. He needs clean up his discipline record if he is to be a major part of Bielsa’s plans next season."

George Brooks

"Berardi is an important player for Leeds and he gives everything every time he steps out onto the pitch. You cannot fault his commitment and his passion for the club, but what you can question is his discipline.

"His red card against Derby in the play-off semi-final came at the worst possible time for Leeds and it arguably cost them the game, as Jack Marriott scored the winner just minutes later.

"Leeds will need to make sure that Berardi keeps control of his emotions in the future and doesn't dive in to challenges like the one against Derby."

Gary Hutchinson

“He’s a hard player, isn’t he?

“Is it ill-discipline? Some might say so.

“I wouldn’t be too critical. He’s a fighter and although it sometimes backfires, supporters respect that,

“At least it shows some commitment to the cause.”
