The board at Barnsley are casting the net wide in their search for a new manager, with BBC Sheffield sports editor Andy Giddings reporting on Twitter, that the hunt had stretched into Europe as they look for Daniel Stendel's replacement.

The Tykes are being overseen by caretaker manager Adam Murray as they prepare to face Swansea City at Oakwell on Saturday, as they search for only their second win of the season.

So as the Tykes spread to Europe in the search for a new manager, what type of manager should they be looking for?

We discuss........

Liam Drury

"Barnsley’s search for a new manager following the departure of Daniel Stendel looks set to go continental, a good move by the Barnsley board.

"Barnsley taking their search continental means that they’ll have more options available to them as they search for a new manager instead of just sticking to the British shores in order to find the right man.

"Based off success that others have had coming from overseas in the past few years, David Wagner being a prime example, hiring from the likes of Germany can pay dividends if the right man for the job is found and can quickly get the squad on side.

"A man from overseas can bring a continental flair with them, a different style of play which most English managers end up adopting and they’ll have fresh ideas to bring with them from whichever country they end up coming from. If Barnsley do appoint a foreign manager, then their gamble could be one that pays off based on past history."

"Ironically, I would say they need someone rather like Daniel Stendel.

"The German was a hugely popular figure during his time at Oakwell, and rightly so, with the relationship he built with the fans a key part in giving the club a positive outlook following the disappointment of relegation in the summer of 2018.

"Considering their current league position, and the fact that Stendel's departure does not appear to be a popular one, and it does seem as though Barnsley need a new manager who will immerse himself with the fans in order to help lift the mood around the club again.

"On the pitch though, with Barnsley struggling for goals more than any other side in the division, they may well need to look for an attack-minded manager who will be able to get the best out of the likes of Cauley Woodrow, Mallik Wilks and co. also has to come into the thinking of the Tykes hierarchy when making this decision."

“Having decided to part ways with Daniel Stendel earlier this month following a dismal start to the 2019/20 campaign, it is imperative that Barnsley get their next appointment spot on.

“Whilst the Tykes achieved a tremendous amount of success in the third-tier last season, Stendel’s inexperience at Championship level ultimately hindered his chances of making any progress at Oakwell.

“Although bringing in managers from Europe can have a positive impact on clubs, Barnsley may find it beneficial to swoop for someone who has a track-record of delivering the goods in the second-tier.

“Given that the Tykes are currently in the Championship relegation zone, they may need a manager who can galvanise their players who are currently bereft of confidence.”
