Former Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris has given his verdict on his former club’s chances in League One this season and revealed that Paul Lambert’s side have surprised him so far.

The Tractor Boys have made a solid start to life in the third tier of English football after they were relegated from the Championship last season.

Ipswich currently sit fifth in League One, with eight points from four games.

Lambert’s side grabbed a very late winner against Wimbledon in midweek, with Kayden Jackson scoring in the 94th minute to secure the three points.

They travel to the Macron Stadium tomorrow to face a Bolton side who are without manager Phil Parkinson after he resigned from his role yesterday.

A win in the North West could see the Town go top if results elsewhere go their way.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World Chief Editor, Sam Rourke, Norris, who made more than 100 appearances for the Tractor Boys, provided his verdict on Ipswich’s hopes for the season.

He said: “I wasn’t (considering them promotion contenders). I thought they might just need a season or so to take stock.

“I think there is a separation between the Premier League and the Championship and the other leagues. Once you drop out of them, you’re out of the big leagues, so I thought they might need a season to take stock and then go again but fair play to them they’ve started well.

“They got a good result in midweek. They have slightly surprised me but they’re good.

“If they can be top half and maybe challenge for the play-offs, I think that will be a decent season."
