West Brom manager Slaven Bilic has a new recruit to his back-room staff after Darren Fletcher returned to the Baggies to try his hand at coaching, at the invitation of sporting and technical director Luke Dowling, as confirmed on the club website.

The former Albion captain, who signed under Tony Pulis in January 2015 and who remained at the club before leaving for Stoke City in the summer of 2017, retired at the end of last season after his contract with the Potters came to an end.

So is it a good move by West Brom to get Fletcher back in the fold?

We discuss.........

George Brooks

"I think this is smart move from West Brom and the club seems to be in a very good place at the moment, both on and off the pitch.

"Fletcher was a quality player and he's someone who has been there and done it at the highest level.

"The younger players at West Brom will be able to learn a great deal from his knowledge, experience and professionalism.

"It's a great opportunity for Fletcher too. It's a chance for him to begin his coaching career at a club that he already knows well and he'll be able to learn a lot from working under a top manager in Slaven Bilic and from the other coaching staff at the club."

Josh Cole

“This could prove to be a shrewd addition by West Brom as Fletcher could use the wealth of experience that he gained during his playing career to help out in a coaching capacity.

“When you consider that the former Scotland international played over 500 games for club and country, he knows exactly what it takes to succeed and thus could pass on his knowledge to the Baggies’ current roster.

“No stranger to the Hawthorns, Fletcher made 97 appearances for West Brom before leaving the club earlier this year.

“Having already developed a rapport with some of the players at the club, there is no reason why the 35-year-old cannot go on to achieve a relative amount of success as a coach alongside Slaven Bilic.”

Toby Wilding

"I think this is a very smart call by the Baggies.

"Even as a player, Fletcher's ability, presence and demeanour meant you always felt he would be someone who would be destined to head into a coaching role when his time on the pitch came to an end.

"Having previously been with West Brom as a player, that prior knowledge of the Baggies' set up and values, as well as his familiarity with some of those players who are still at the Hawthorns now, means this is a position he should be able to slot into fairly easily.

"Combine that with the experience he has in winning silverware from his may years at Manchester United, and it feels like this could be a big boost for West Brom when it comes to their hopes of winning promotion back to the Premier League this season."
