Sunderland manager Jack Ross will be frustrated by the injury to striker Will Grigg, that has come at such a crucial time with the Black Cats in the midst of a promotion battle in League One and with a Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth to prepare for at the end of the month.

Grigg has returned to the club from international duty after a flare-up of an ankle injury, prior to the European Championship qualifiers against Estonia and Belarus, as reported on Chronicle Live.

So with Grigg likely to be sidelined, 26-year-old Charlie Wyke could be the man that Ross turns to, but is he good enough to step into Grigg's boots?

We discuss........

Gary Hutchinson

“He is, but not currently.

“When he’s on form he’s a top League One striker.

“Sadly, he’s out of form and has been all season.

“It’s time to worry.”

Louie Chandler

"Not for me.

"He may be able to hold the fort for a while but does not have the ruthless nature in front of goal that Grigg possesses.

"This could be Sunderland's undoing if it happens."

Alfie Burns

“I think Ross thinks he’s good enough, which is all that’s important.

“Wyke has qualities that are different to Grigg, although he probably isn’t as prolific as his teammate.

“However, Sunderland have goals from midfield, which would certainly help Wyke out.”

Jay Taylor

“I don’t think it is fair to ask if he is good enough, as they are both totally different strikers.

“Grigg is one to run off the last man and look to be in the box picking up scraps and poaching his way to goal.

“Wyke is more powerful and adept in the air – somewhat of a target man if you will.

“He can step up if Sunderland alter their tactics to suit Wyke – if they don’t then it would be pretty slim pickings if you ask me.”
