Kevin Phillips is emerging as a leading contender for the Sunderland manager's job, with the new owner pinpointing the Derby County coach as the man he'd like - according to the Sun.

Would this be a wise move by the Black Cats?

We discuss....

George Dagless

It's a risk that could pay off.

Phillips is a real fan favourite and would have the backing of the fans and, you'd think, the respect of the players.

He's been a coach at plenty of clubs but being a manager is something else and he'd have to get to grips quickly.

If he does, though, he'd be a hit.

Ben Barkworth

Phillips would be a bad appointment because he lacks experience in management.

Being an assistant doesn't prepare properly for the actual role. Sunderland can;t afford to take risks with the next manager they bring in.

Alfie Burns

Absolutely, I think he’d be perfect.

High-profile names haven’t delivered in recent years for Sunderland, and with relegation to League One confirmed, it is time for a fresh approach.

Phillips lacks experience, but with the support of everyone at Sunderland, I can see the 44-year-old succeeding.

Jay Williams

Phillips is rated highly as a coach and is obviously loved by the club.

But right now, the Black Cats need some managerial experience and either Mick McCarthy or Michael Appleton would be my pick.

Perhaps this is not the time for any sentimental appointments at Sunderland - just look at their local rivals Newcastle and how club legend Alan Shearer did there as a manager.

Chris Gallagher

This is a risk.

Phillips is a legend at the club and is said to be a very good coach but Sunderland can't afford to not go up next season.

Therefore, I'd be more inclined to go with Mick McCarthy or a Chris Wilder if he was available.
