New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith may be buoyed by the three points picked up at the weekend in his first match in charge, but is experienced enough to know that his side are by no means the finished article with strengthening the defence an obvious priority.

With the free agent market the only option for Smith until the January transfer opens, it may well be time for the Villa man to make his move, with a number of candidates out there that he could consider.

So should Smith dip into the free agent market for a new centre-back this week?

We discuss.....

Jay Taylor

After Saturday’s clean sheet, that might have changed his mind a little bit.

Defensively Villa are still weak and need depth in that position so you would imagine he will be looking out for a defender but he will not want to panic.

I am sure Dean Smith is still assessing his squad and will want to fully be aware of what they can do before he dives into making a free agent signing.

Gary Hutchinson

Yes, he’s surely got to think it a priority.

Mind you, there’s the clean sheet to consider this weekend too.

Has he got it in his mind to get through until January and make do?

I can’t see it myself.

George Harbey

I think he will.

He’s already spoken about his ambition to sign a centre back to sort their defensive issues, and after a hectic week last week then I think now is the time to concentrate on a centre half.

Robert Huth would be a fantastic signing for them.
