Derby County look to get their season back on track, when Phillip Cocu's side take current Championship leader's Leeds United at Elland Road in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

With Cocu needing to get a result he may be tempted to select striker Chris Martin, who has only managed three appearances so far this season, being used predominately in the Carabao Cup.

So should Cocu opt for Martin at the weekend?

Chris Gallagher

"Only as an impact sub at best.

"There is a temptation to go long when you have a player like Martin in the side and that would play into Leeds' hands. Teams don't get enough men forward to play off the striker and the Whites can just build up pressure as you give away the ball.

"Instead, they should go toe-to-toe with them, as they did in the play-offs. That means Jack Marriott or Martyn Waghorn should start in the central role as they have the ability to run in behind and stretch play.

"Martin is a good alternative option though and he could cause a few problems late on when Derby may want to go direct, if the game calls for that."

Toby Wilding

"I think he should consider it.

"With Tom Lawrence suspended, Cocu may well need to turn elsewhere to provide that extra attacking impetus to his side, and Martin could be a decent option.

"Going with a more out and out striker such as Martin could put more direct pressure on Leeds' defence, and that could be just what they need to break them down at Elland Road on Saturday.

"Having only just forced his way back into the side with a cameo appearance from the bench against Cardiff last weekend, you imagine Martin will want to build from that as quickly as he can, and this could be the perfect opportunity for him to do so."

Ned Holmes

“I think this could be a really shrewd move from the Dutchman.

“This Leeds defence have been fantastic so far but if they do have an issue it seems to be set pieces and big strikers–Martin can help in both categories.

“They appear to be missing Pontus Jansson’s aerial presence, as three of the five goals they’ve conceded this season have been from corners, while Sam Vokes won 15 aerial duels against them in the Carabao Cup tie.

“Derby may also look at the way Nottingham Forest and Swansea City sat back and defended to good effect at Elland Road, and Martin could prove a useful out-ball if they’re going to set up like that.”
