Huddersfield Town manager Jan Siewert has exercised his club's option, to turn winger Isaac Mbenza's loan move of last season into a permanent signing, from French club Montpellier, as confirmed on the club website.

The 23-year-old spent the entire 2018/19 season on loan with the Terriers, making 22 Premier League appearances and joins on a two-year contract, with the option of a further year in Huddersfield's favour.

He most recently played for his country, Belgium, in the European Under-21 Championships, appearing in all three group games.

So is Mbenza a good signing for the Terriers?

We discuss........

Chris Gallagher

"Based on last season, you'd have to say no.

"Mbenza struggled to adapt to his first season in English football and he was a disappointment, along with most of his teammates.

"However, his record prior to joining the Terriers was very impressive when you consider his age and he has shown flashes to suggest he could be a decent player in the future.

"So, it's a smart move from Huddersfield and a year in the Championship could be exactly what the 23-year-old needs to get a good run of games in order to find his form.

"He has the ability, it's now about showing that and if he does he can be a key player next season."

Alfie Burns

“Mbenza’s loan spell in West Yorkshire was hardly prolific, but you’ve got to accept this might be a good deal at Huddersfield look for some consistency within the playing squad.

“Stepping down into the Championship will work one of two ways for the versatile forward; he will either absolutely fly in the second-tier, or he’ll struggle to adapt to its demands.

“Town will hope it is the former, but after just one goal in the Premier League, it could well be the latter.

“Time will tell and you will have to run the rule over this in a couple of months.”

Louie Chandler

"I think so but he still has plenty to prove at the John Smiths.

"The Terriers' attack was painfully lacklustre last season and as someone who played 22 times within it, I remain unconvinced.

"But he did show in flashes of the talent he possesses and at 23 he clearly still has plenty of time to improve on that raw talent and it will be interesting to see what Jan Siewert can do.

"The German boss has set about bolstering the club's attack this season which was an obvious weak point for them last season and I think it is definitely the right tactic."
