After missing out in the play-off semi-finals to eventual winners Fulham, Derby County fans will have been confident of staging a serious push for promotion in the 2018/19 campaign.

But, when manager Gary Rowett decided to jump ship when relegated Stoke City came calling, those hopes were thrown up in the air somewhat.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was offered his first managerial job by the Rams and was undoubtedly an exciting appointment, but was also far from a reliable one.

His transfer dealings, however, quickly impressed.

Jack Marriott, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Harry Wilson to mark a change in approach at the club with an influx of young attacking talent.

But there was a signing made with no whispers or rumours at the other end of the pitch which took plenty of fans by surprise.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

The man in question was left-back Scott Malone who moved from Huddersfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

He was somebody with plenty of Championship experience having enjoyed spells with Fulham, Cardiff City and Millwall, racking up over 150 second-tier appearances before his arrival at Pride Park.

It took the 27-year-old a while to find his feet in his new team, however, battling with Craig Bryson for the starting spot on the left of the defence.

In fact, it was not until his 15th game at the club that he finally made two appearances back-to-back, but since then has become an integral member of Frank Lampard's side.

Solid in defence and a constant influence down the left-wing, Malone appears to have that position absolutely nailed down.
